“It takes a village”
What is a doula?
A doula is a non medical companion that is specifically trained in labor and childbirth and can support you emotionally and physically through pregnancy, birth & adjusting to life after baby is born. Doulas can help by providing the 4 pillars of support:
PHYSICAL, EMOTIONAL, INFORMATIONAL, ADVOCACY
Its also important to note what doulas are not:
Doulas don’t replace the other trained healthcare professionals who care for you, they simply work alongside your ob/gyn provider to help ensure your needs are being met. A doula should put your wishes and values before their own. Doulas do not perform clinical tasks, give medical advice, diagnose, or make decisions for a client.
Don’t just take my word for it— let the science do the talking!
What is the evidence-based research on using a doula?
39% decrease in the risk of Cesarean
15% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth
10% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
Shorter labors by 41 minutes on average
38% decrease in the baby’s risk of a low five minute Apgar score
31% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience; mothers’ risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience was reduced with continuous support provided by a doula or someone in their social network (family or friend), but not hospital staff
